Ex-Owner Of McDonald's In Belarus Sentenced To 8 Years In Prison

The owner of the McDonald’s franchise in Belarus and Kazakhstan, oligarch Kairat Boranbayev, was sentenced on March 31 by a court in Astana to eight years in prison with confiscation of property, Zerkalo writes.

Boronbaev and other defendants in the case were found guilty of embezzlement of 14.5 billion tenge during the resale of gas.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison with confiscation of property, with lifelong deprivation of the right to hold positions in the civil service. He will serve time in prison.

Kairat Boronbayev is the owner of the McDonald's franchise in both Belarus and Kazakhstan. He is the father of Alima Boranbayeva, the former daughter-in-law of the daughter of ex-president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, Dariga Nazarbayeva. He was arrested in March 2022. Two years ago, he was ranked 14th in the list of the 50 richest businessmen in Kazakhstan.
