First Total Shutdown Of Zaporizhzhia NPP In History

The nuclear power plant was stopped due to the actions of the Russian occupiers.

The current power outage in the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, which led to the cessation of water supply and interruptions in communications, was caused by a fire at the ash dumps of the Zaporizhzhia TPP. This power plant is located next to the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and they are connected. The Energoatom reports.

The power producer explained that the shutdown of the overhead line led to changes in the operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. This Zaporizhzhia NPP communication line with the power system of Ukraine, VL-750 kV Zaporizhzhia NPP Dniprivskaya, was closed twice due to a fire. This is the last fourth line of communication of Zaporizhzhia NPP with the power system of Ukraine. The Russians previously damaged three other lines of communication with shelling.

The consequence of the current incident was the disconnection of two operating power units of the nuclear power plant from the network. “Thus, the actions of the invaders led to the complete disconnection of the Zaporizhzhia NPP from the network, the first time in the history of the plant,” Energoatom said.

The company also reported that the NPP's own needs for power supply are currently provided from the energy system of Ukraine through the Zaporizhzhia NPP communication line, the Zaporizhzhia TPP. “There are no comments on the operation of automation and security systems yet. Start-up operations are underway to connect one of the power units to the network,” the Ukrainian nuclear professionals added.
