The U.S. Secretary of State has stressed that Lukashenka is illegitimate and the people want another governing.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the election in Belarus was a falsification and the U.S. opposes the fact that Lukashenka himself took the oath of office, Interfax reports.

"We announced that the election was a falsification, within days of its completion. We were against him (Lukashenka - ed.) taking the oath of office. We do not think it makes sense. We know what the people of Belarus want. They want something else. They want freedom. They want to turn to the other side that President Lukashenka hasn't allowed them, and we will be there to try to help them, to support them," - Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News.

The U.S. secretary of state added that the U.S. has made it clear to Russia that it is in no one's interest to interfere in the situation.

"It will not benefit the people of Russia, it will not benefit the people of Belarus, it will complicate relations between all countries of the region," - Pompeo stressed.
