Brest activists have called the regional authorities onto the carpet.

This is the second meeting. During the first one, head of the Brest regional executive committee Anatol Lis promised to check all the facts of violation. Today, Lis did not attend the meeting, Radio Svaboda reports.

The second meeting of the opponents of the construction of a battery plant near Brest with the regional authorities began at 10 o'clock on July 17 and lasted until 12:00. Head of the region Anatol Lis didn’t come. The activists were explained in the regional executive committee that he could not attend the meeting because he was busy.

One of the opponents of the construction of the plant Dzmitry Bekaliuk said what the activists had heard from the authorities.

“There were the first deputy head of the regional executive committee, a representative of the Vodokanal, the head of environmental protection of the region, representatives of housing and public utilities, the center of epidemiology and hygiene, and other officials,” said Dzmitry Bekaliuk. “We once again voiced all our questions about this plant. They didn’t tell us anything about the test results. It was our monologue. They said they would take our information into account, it would be checked. They also said that the Prosecutor General’s Office was studying the process of building the plant, currently checking it. The Prosecutor General’s Office involved the Academy of Sciences and other departments into this. I demanded answers to the questions that we had asked to head of the regional executive committee Anatol Lis at the first meeting. They said that they could not give the answers. We have not heard any answers at all. We listened, recorded everything and that was all.

The first meeting of the opponents of the battery plant construction near Brest with the leadership of the Brest regional executive committee was held on June 12. It also lasted for several hours. During the conversation with the activists, Anatol Lis promised to check all the facts of violations voiced by the visitors. Three days after meeting with them, Anatol Lis signed a decree on suspending the construction of the plant and conducting a relevant check.

On June 28, it became known about the detention of businessman Viktar Lemiasheuski, the owner of the battery plant near Brest. Five days after that, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported that criminal proceedings were initiated against Lemiasheuski and many his subordinates for giving a bribe. At the moment, the businessman is in the KGB jail in Minsk.

Despite the arrest of Viktar Lemiasheuski and the check of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Brest, the activists continue their round-the-clock duty outside the plant building, as well as weekly protests in the main square of the regional center. Last Sunday, on July 14, more than a hundred people took to the square to the building of the regional executive committee. According to the activists, the protests will be terminated only after the complete closure of the enterprise.
