Attempt To Import 28 Thousand Liters Of "Hawthorn" From Russia

All products could get to the market during the Christmas holidays.

Employees of the State Control Committee of Belarus blocked the channel for delivery of liquid containing methyl alcohol from Russia, Radio Svaboda informs, referring to the TV-channel Belarus-1. Bottles labeled "Hawthorn" were shown on air.

Several trucks loaded with the hazardous liquid were detained in Homel region. All the products, according to the TV channel, could get on the market during the Christmas holidays.

The infusion of hawthorn bears no mortal danger by itself. But in Irkutsk (Russia) there was a mass poisoning of cosmetic means called "Hawthorn", which contained the deadly methyl alcohol instead of ethyl alcohol.

At the beginning of January it was reported that 78 people died from the poisoning. 19 suspects were detained, four were arrested.

After the Russian tragedy temporary restrictions on the sale of tinctures of hawthorn, marigold (calendula), valerian, Leonurus, ant alcohol were introduced in Belarus.
