Installation Of Carbon Monoxide Detectors In Apartments To Become Obligatory In Belarus

The installation of the carbon monoxide detectors will be obligatory.

Chief Engineer of the sector of technical inspectorate of the gas supply systems administration of the state production association “Beltopgas” Ihar Petryk has told this at a press-briefing, answering the question of BelTA state news agency.

By the end of 2016, the carbon monoxide detectors will have become obligatory in the accommodation facilities with gas equipment.

"According to the protocol of the Commission on Emergency Situations under the Council of Ministers, a complex plan has been elaborated, including formation of the working group consisting of the representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the communal utilities center, the Ministry for Emergency Situations, the state production association “Beltopgas” and the State Industry Supervision. The working group considers, as one of the innovations, including installation of alarms or detectors of carbon monoxide at the residential premises with the gas equipment with the centralized exhaust pipe, into the regulations of the household use of gas", - Ihar Petryk has clarified.

The amendments should be made till December 31.

Chief Engineer of the unitary enterprise “Minoblgas” Siarhei Kurashevich has added that in fact it means obligatory installation of the carbon monoxide detectors in every apartment.

At present, installation of the detectors is conducted upon the proprietor’s wish.

A carbon monoxide detector costs Bn22. It will be purchased and installed for the expense of the proprietors.

CO detectors make an audible or visual signal upon detecting of carbon monoxide. This is not the same as a fire alarm. Fire detectors detect the combustion gases, while carbon monoxide detectors - CO.

The need to install such detectors appeared after the tragedy in Barysau and other incidents, when people were massively poisoned by carbon monoxide.
