Stanislau Shushkevich: I Am Happy That People Were Not Afraid To Come To Congress

The first head of independent Belarus commented on the Belarusian National Congress.

As charter97.org reported, today the Congress was held in the Yanka Kupala park, because the authorities refused to provide premises for the opposition event.

“I don’t think having this Congress outside is a good idea, but there was no alternative. Neither of state structures gave us the premises. And I was afraid that people would not gather, but now I see that people have gathered! So, there is human dignity in those who gathered. They sometimes have to hide it in our rotten society that is controlled by the rotten power, but you see, people are not afraid of anything, they have come there. There were beautiful faces. It makes me very happy,”Stanislau Shushkevich said in his interview to Radio Svaboda.
