Contaminated Land Is To Have Been Restored Only By 2400

However, Lukashenka demands to plow, sow and populate the areas affected by the disaster as quickly as possible.

“Belarus was right to take the path of rehabilitation of areas affected by the Chernobyl disaster,” – the Belarusian ruler said today during his visit to Homel region.

According to him, contaminated by the Chernobyl accident lands have long been populated and seeded on his decree.

“Today almost no land, that has to be returned to life, is left in Yelsk district. Even inarable land has been plowed up,”– Lukashenka is proud of himself.

“Take Dobryn for example: there are 50 kids in kindergarten, and many more are ready to come over soon. Hence, there is a prospect, there is life,“ – the dictator says.

However, as the charter97.org website has found out, there are dozens of counter-arguments to Lukashenka's theory on safety and security of development of lands, affected by the accident, even on government websites devoted to the issues of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

For example, the official website chernobyl.gov.by informs about the problem of dangerous elements’ accumulation in the soil.

“100 years after the Chernobyl accident, in 2086, the total activity of the soil in the contaminated areas of Belarus will be 2.4 times higher than in the initial post-accident period,” – a report on the Chernobyl accident consequences says.

The decrease of the soil’s α-activity is expected only after 2400.

However, Lukashenka spits upon the specialists’ opinion – in his words, “in five years, which have already begun, with all the problems and difficulties, we will finally solve all the issues that are associated with the south of the country, for these lands to forget the tragedy.”

With regard to the settlement of the contaminated land, the conclusions of experts are disappointing:

“The economic crisis has put the radioactively contaminated areas in particularly difficult socio-economic conditions. The common features of the crisis come out especially sharply there: decline in production, outflow of population from these areas, poor consumer sector, low level of meeting the needs of social amenities and health care.

“Neither self-healing of the affected areas, nor restoration of the facilities located there is possible in such circumstances,” – the experts’ report said.
