15 years for Russian airbase in Belarus

An agreement between Minsk and Moscow on Russian airbase in Belarus is sent to Vladimir Putin for signature.

The respective document was published on the Ministers' web-site on September 8. It notes that the draft document was also developed by a Belarusian side.

The agreement regulates the use of airbase in jointly with the Armed forces of Belarus to protect the two countries, including "combating armed attack by international terrorist groups."

Place of deployment is not specified, Salidarnasts reports.

In case of a terrorist act, the Commander of the Russian airbase with the agreement of the Belarusian side "has the right to apply the military units of the Russian airbase for enhancing the protection of military sites of the Russian Federation".

The agreement is valid within 15 years. It will be automatically extended in case of mutual agreement.

It should be reminded that on Tuesday Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev stated that agreement on Russian airbase in Belarus would be turn around and signed in “comfortable terms” for Minsk and Moscow.
