Azarenka withdraws from Cincinnati

Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka retired from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati with an upper left leg injury on 20 August.

The Belarusian, ranked 21st in the world, won the first set in her match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-1 and was down 0-3 in the second set when she had to pull out.

In the opener Victoria Azarenka saw off Lauren Davis of the United States (World No.85) 6-1, 6-2. Later, the Belarusian took a solid win over Danish fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-0, 6-4.

Victoria Azarenka hoisted the Western & Southern Open cup in 2013.

In the men's doubles Belarus' Max Mirnyi and Feliciano Lopez of Spain won the Cincinnati opener, beating Spanish-Uruguayan tandem David Marrero and Pablo Cuevas 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 10-6. In the second round the Belarusian-Spanish pairing defeated Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-3. In the quarterfinal Max Mirnyi and Feliciano Lopez will take on Leander Paes of India and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

The Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati will be over on 23 August.
