High-ranking official of Belarusian Defence Ministry detained for bribery

The official unsuccessfully tried to escape in his car during an operation of the riot police.

Charter97.org learnt it from the police department of the Hrodna regional executive committee.

“A high-ranking official – deputy commander of a military unit responsible for logistics – was detained as he was accepting a bribe as result of an anti-corruption operation carried out by the economic crime department of Hrodna's Kastrychnitski district,” the press release reads. “The suspect received $300 for a favourable decision on an issue of buying furniture for the military unit. The official unsuccessfully tried to escape in his car during an operation by the riot police to detain him.”

The Investigation Committee's department for the Hrodna region opened a criminal case against the deputy commander under part 1 of article 430 of the Criminal Code (accepting a bribe). The official was detained as a suspect.
