Liavon Barshcheuski: We showed the way the Belarusians should follow

The Declaration on State Sovereignty emphasized the neutral status of Belarus. It is not observed now.

Liavon Barshcheuski, former Deputy of the Supreme Council of Belarus, tell about reasons for the document adopted on July 27, 1990, Radio Racyja reports.

- It is a significant date. We showed the way the Belarusians should follow. The status of neutral and nuclear-free state was a very significant point. It provides us with a moral and legal ground to reach this goal someday. An issue of independence of the country is closely connected with it. If we conduct an independent policy, we will be an independent state.

- It is said that the Declaration was some kind of elites' compromise…

- I think it's true. The majority in the Supreme Council did not even think about it. The minority had the point, but had to agree with the majority. At least, first ten paragraphs were a result of hard work and agreements. But it also proved there could be different political trends in Belarus and they managed to negotiate. It is a good example. Now the situation is different.

- What do we have 25 years after the Declaration adoption?

- It would be easier to say what we do not have... For example, compromise, true independence and neutrality. The declaration is the document for future. And it is of significant importance.
