The imitative group of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich was denied registration.

It was said at a meeting of the Central Election Commission of Belarus (CEC) on Monday, Interfax-Zapad news agency reports.

The imitative group to nominate Mikalai Statkevich as a presidential candidates includes more than 1,500 people, among them Zinaidna Bandarenka, Pavel Seviarynets, Aliaksei Marachkin, Uladzimir Khalip, Mikalai Autukhovich, Slavamir Adamovich, Liavon Volski, Aliaksandr Tamkovich, Viachaslau Siuchyk, Siarhei Zakonnikau, Yury Khashchavatski, Zmitser Dashkevich, Volha Zavadskaya.

The documents for the registration of the initiative group were submitted to the CEC on July 16. Maryna Adamovich, the politician's wife, was the head of the group.

Head of the Central Election Commission Lidziya Yarmoshyna earlier said it was impossible to register Mikalai Statkevich as a presidential candidate. “He has a conviction, and we don't have legal rights to register him as a candidate for presidency. Moreover, we don't have the right to register his initiative group. If the initiative group is not registered, who will collect signatures for him? All such campaigns, if they are carried out, will be illegitimate,” Yarmoshyna said.
