Senator McCain: Belarus deserves chance to join EU and NATO

Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine deserve a chance to become members of the EU and NATO if they meet the necessary requirements.

It was said by US Senator John McCain at the Global Security Forum in Bratislava, Radio Svaboda reports.

McCain answered the question of debate moderator Robin Shepherd whether he regretted that Russia's western neighbours hadn't had a chance five of ten years ago to join the EU and NATO, and whether he thought the opportunity was missed completely.

McCain emphasised that democratisation was a mandatory condition for joining NATO.
