Russia’s president has called upon leaders of Belarus and Kazakhstan to think about forming a single currency union.

Vladimir Putin said so during the meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana, Reuters informs.

“We think the time has come to discuss a possibility of forming a currency union in prospect,” Putin said.

He added that “working shoulder to shoulder” it is easier to defend the common financial market, RBK writes.

We remind that on March 10 Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has already instructed the Central Bank and the Cabinet of Ministers to deal with the issue of currency integration in the Eurasian Economic Union and to see into the matter of integration in the currency sphere and creation a currency union in a long run.

A trilateral meeting of the leaders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus has taken place today in Astana.

The next meeting in the same format is to be held in Moscow on May 8.
