Victoria Azarenka reaches US Open last 16

Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka (World No.17) breezed through to the US Open last 16 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Russia's Elena Vesnina (56) in 57 minutes.

In the opener Victoria Azarenka outplayed World No.90 Misaki Doi of Japan 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-1 and progressed to the third round after securing a solid 6-3, 6-2 win over American Christina McHale (43).

In Last 16 the Belarusian will face 21-year-old Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia (145) that stunned third seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4 in round three.

In the two previous US Open finals Victoria Azarenka was stopped by Serena Williams of the United States. In 2012 the American won the three-set game 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. A year ago Serena Williams celebrated a 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1 victory.

20-year-old Alexandra Sasnovich of Belarus (World No.120) made a stout resistance to World. No.11 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in a 3-6, 4-6 defeat in her second round. World No.117 Olga Govortsova lost to Eugenie Bouchard of Canada (8) 2-6, 1-6 in the opener.

Paired with China's Hao-Ching Chan, Max Mirnyi of Belarus cruised through the fifth-seeded Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic and Horia Tecau of Romania 6-3, 6-3 in the mixed doubles opener. The Belarusian-Chinese tandem will next play Australians Ashleigh Barty and John Peers. In the previous years Max Mirnyi won the mixed doubles three times: with Serena Williams in 1999, Victoria Azarenka in 2007 and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in 2013.

The $38.3 million US Open will finish on 8 September.
