UK Prime Minister and EU Council president: Russia’s actions are provocation

Cameron and Van Rompuy held a phone conversation preceding the EU summit on Saturday.

UK Prime Minister and the president of the European Council insist on the necessity of European Union’s putting pressure on Russia, aimed at de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine. This was announced on Wednesday, 27 August, by an official spokesperson of the head of the British government, Korrespondent reports.

David Cameron and Herman Van Rompuy held a phone conversation preceding the EU summit, which is scheduled to take place on 30 August in Brussels, ITAR-TASS reports.

“As to the situation in Ukraine, they agree that the EU should keep putting pressure on the Russian leadership for the sake of discharging the situation”, - the representative of the London office noted. According to him, Cameron discussed the crisis in Ukraine also in a separate talk with Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Both leaders agreed that on Saturday the European Council should react to the persisting situation in Ukraine’s east, including the provocative actions of the Russian Federation”, - the statement says.
