Herman Van Rompuy: EU to continue working on more sanctions against Russia

The European Union is to continue working on additional restrictive measures against Russia.

They could be used in case of the further escalation of the situation in Ukraine, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy says, Interfax-Ukraine informs.

“Should events so require, preparatory work by the European Commission and the European External Action Service on possible further targeted measures is under way and will continue,” President of the European Council said at a press-conference in Brussels.

“We call on Russia to cooperate with the elected and legitimate president” of Ukraine “and contribute actively to de-escalation efforts, notably through the withdrawal of its troops from the border. By not addressing these issues, Russia is contributing to the increase of violence in the eastern regions,” Van Rompuy said.
