NATO to open bases in Eastern Europe

NATO will consider permanently stationing troops in Eastern Europe.

The statement was made in Ottawa by US General Philip Breedlove, NATO's supreme allied commander for Europe, ITAR-TASS news agency reports.

“I think this is something that we have to consider, and we will tee this up for discussion through the leaderships of our nations,” the general said, adding the possible decision can be taken due to the escalation of the situation in Ukraine.

The Alliance earlier announced sending more troops to Eastern Europe. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen informed the EU defence ministers on April 15 that the organisation had taken and would take measures to further strengthen collective defence at sea, in the air and on land due to the Ukrainian crisis.
