Photo-fact: Belarusian “titushki” at work

Hundreds of men in civilian clothes were traditionally watching the rally of the Belarusian opposition yesterday.

A reader of charter97.org photographed some of them. As a rule, plainclothes policemen track down, beat and detain active protesters in Belarus. They also give false evidence at trials against opposition activists.

Though permitted by the authorities, yesterday's Freedom Day rally ended in detentions of more than 10 activists. Some of them, including coordinator of European Belarus civil campaign Maksim Viniarski, will be tried today.
