Andrey Piontkovskiy: Ukraine hit Putin in his complexes

Putin’s major concern is not Ukraine’s NATO membership, but its refusal to participate in the Eurasian Union.

The opinion came from a Russian political scientist Andrey Piontkovskiy, UNN reports.

The expert pointed out that since the collapse of the Soviet Union Russian politicians “have constantly been dreaming of placing themselves at the head of something global”.

“The main concern is not Ukraine’s NATO membership, because it does not pose any threat to Russia. The concern is Ukraine’s refusal to become a part of the Eurasian Union. These illusions are phantom – these are not the dreams of a certain politician, but the delirium of the whole political establishment of the Russian Federation. They do not even realize that no one needs these unions”, - the political scientist said.

Piontkovskiy sees such a reaction of the Russian political elite to be a psychological complex.

“These are Russian elite’s psychological complexes to place themselves at the head of something global. For Putin it was precisely Ukraine’s refusal that brought to the crash of his dream”, - he concluded.
