Elmar Brok: It's time for sanctions

The EU Foreign Affairs Council is expected to discuss sanctions against the Ukrainian authorities at an extraordinary meeting on February 20.

It was said by Elmar Brok, the chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, at a press conference on the situation in Ukraine, RBC-Ukraine reports.

He confirmed the emergency meeting of the EU foreign ministers would be held tomorrow to discuss the escalation of the Ukrainian situation and ways to resolve it.

The EU official said to the press conference it's time to impose sanctions, including travel and financial restrictions, against the Ukrainian authorities.

The sanctions should be applied exclusively to the authorities not affecting ordinary citizens, according to Brok.

The EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has called an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council tomorrow, February 20, 2014. The meeting is due to begin at 14:00.
