Philip Breedlove: NATO-Russia relations are moving towards strategic turning point

  • 4.11.2014, 9:16

General Philip Breedlove, the supreme NATO commander in Europe, has addressed Pentagon with a request to increase the number of US troops in Eastern Europe on temporary deployments.

In addition, Philip Breedlove asks to provide more supplies and military hardware at key bases in Europe because of the constant threat posed by Russia. The US general has stated on Monday that the increased presence of the Alliance is needed in the Baltics, in Poland, in Romania, Deutsche Welle reports.

He has also warned that the relations between the NATO and Russia are moving to a strategic turning point.

Besides, General Breedlove noted that since a ceasefire was agreed between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists in September, fighting has continued but the line of demarcation between the two sides has solidified while the eastern border with Russia has “become completely porous.” As said by him, a frozen conflict may occur under such conditions.

The NATO chief has also attracted attention to the fact that 7 military brigades are shifting their locations in the areas of Russia near the Ukrainian border all the time, so it is hard to tell the exact number of troops there.
