Buckwheat price in Belarus to rise due to high demand in Russia

Belarus imports a part of buckwheat from Russia, where prices are going up.

The authorities of the neighbouring country try to persuade people that buckwheat harvest was good, but shops report panic buying. Prices have doubled in some regions, Nasha Niva writes.

Buckwheat harvest in Altai Krai, Russia's main buckwheat producer, was 25 per cent less than last year due to bad weather conditions in autumn. The 40% fall of the Russia ruble also boost price growth.

As a result, buckwheat prices have increased from 30 to 45 Russian rubles and reached 70-100 rubles in some regions, Russian media report.

The price growth will also hit Belarus. Though our country continues to increase buckwheat production and products of Skidal and Homel grain processing plants have a great market share in Belarus, the country also imports buckwheat from Russia and China.

The price of a pack of buckwheat has been remaining less than 10,000 rubles in the past year.
