Hrodnology author may be fired from university after 30 years of work

The council of Yanka Kupala Hrodna State University voted against granting the title of professor to Doctor of Historical Studies Vyachaslau Shved as professor.

Shved was relieved of his duties as head of the department of Belarusian culture and regional tourism in March, Radio Svaboda reports.

According to Vyachaslau Shved, the rector is expected to release an order in two or three days to define his future. It is most likely to be an order for dismissal.

Vyachaslau Shved has worked in Yanka Kupala Hrodna State University for more than 30 years. He was awarded with the Medal of Merit to Yanka Kupala Hrodna State University.

Vyachaslau Shved is an author of books on the history of Hrodna. He is a co-author of Hrodnology book. In the beginning, the local media published reviews of the book. Some presentations were held. But later the authors were invited to conversations with the staff of the rector's office and KGB officers.

Co-author Andrei Charnyakevich was dismissed from the university for “failure of observe labour discipline”. Head of the Hrodna regional executive committee Syamyon Shapira later said in public it was his personal decision to dismiss Andrei Charnyakevich from the university.
