(updated) Former presidential candidate Ales Mihalevich was detained by the US immigration service.

A civic activist Yury Ziankovich wrote about that on his Facebook page.

Ales Mihalevich arrived to New York from Warsaw on 25 September 2012. The aim of his visit is to participate in the work of the UN General Assembly and its human rights committee in particular.

The immigration service officials explained his detention with the fact that the politician’s name is in the United States Department of Justice’s list. In 12 hours the politician was released. As Ales Mihalivich himself wrote on his Facebook page he was searched and handcuffed. The Washington Interpol’s office hasn’t struck the politician off the list yet.

It is known that the Belarusian KGB issued an international order for Ales Mihalevich’s arrest which regularly creates him problems while crossing borders of different states. In similar way last year Ales Mihalevich was even arrested while attempting to take a flight from the Warsaw airport, but was released after the Polish MFA stepped in.
