Alyaksei Kiryenka: Boycott is the most horrible development for authorities

On August 29, a pre-election speech of candidate Alyaksei Kiryenka from the United Civil Party (UCP) wasn't aired on the state radio. A jazz song was played on the radio instead, Radio Svaboda reports.

Alyaksei Kiryenka says he called on voters to boycott the election.

“The authorities are afraid of an election boycott. It is the most horrible development for them. They are trying to force people to vote. They are trying to isolate them from us, who support boycotting. I was warned that my speech could not be aired,” he said.

Speeches of Kiryenka's rivals were aired on the radio.

Mikalai Rasyuk's speech was not broadcast in Mahilou. He represents the United Civil Party in the election.

UCP activist Andrei Reznichenka's speech was not aired in Vitebsk. He was not warned he wouldn't be shown. The activist says this decision was taken by the director of the local TV and radio company.
