Almost a thousand and a half signatures (1466) have been collected by the noon of March 2 under the petition to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) calling to deprive Belarus of the right to host the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship.

The campaign “Leave the dictator on ice” was initiated by Polish member of the European Parliament Marek Migalski. Everyone can sign the petition to the IIHF on the website www.dyktatornalodzie.pl.

Calls to deprive Belarus of the right to host the ice hockey championship began to appear after brutal suppression of a peaceful demonstration against the official results of the presidential election on December 19, 2010.

Swedish media report on February 27 with a link to the IIHF Communications Director Szymon Szemberg the IIHF congress is expected to review in May the decision on hosting the 2014 world championship. The chair of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation, Yauheny Vorsin, denied this information.

Szemberg said in an exclusive comment to BelPAN news agency on February 28 the international federation may raise a question on reviewing a decision on the place of the championship in May.

On February 29, the head of the department for physical culture, sports and tourism at the Minsk city executive committee, Alyaksei Prakapovich, said at a press conference the Belarusian capital would not suffer financial damages if the championship was moved.
