MEP: Blacklist should be extended, not reduced

Member of the European Parliament Marek Migalski has heard nothing about the initiative by the Office for a Democratic Belarus regarding revising travel restrictions against Belarusian officials.

He thinks the EU should rather extend the list than reduce it.

“The situation in Belarus rather deteriorates than improves. It means the blacklist should rather be extended than reduced. Except we understand it like encouraging some officials to think if they should hope for Lukashenka,” Marek Migalski said in an interview to Eruroradio.

The MEP stressed the aim of the sanctions against official Minsk was to improve the situation of political prisoners.

“The situation of political prisoners should be improved, not worsened – this is among our priorities. If the effect had been reverse, we would need to revise the concept. But we need the regime to experience repression against itself,” Migalski said.
