Candles against death punishment across Belarus

Cities for Life/Cities Against the Death Penalty event was held on November 30 in many countries across the world.

Minsk activists of the campaign “Human rights activists against the death penalty” gathered near St Symon and Alena Church, Radio Svaboda reports.

They lit candles to protest against the use of the death penalty in Belarus.

Andrei Paluda, a coordinator of the campaign “Human rights activists against the death penalty” , said: “It wasn't the occasion that we chose this particular place. The death penalty is a big sin in Christianity. Detention facility No. 1, where death sentences are executed in a special corridor, is not far from here.”

Pickets against capital punishment were held in other Belarusian cities and abroad.

Belarus obtained notoriety not only for being the dictatorship in the centre of Europe, but also for being the only European country that still uses the death penalty.
