Werner Schultz: Lukashenka will understand only economic sanctions

  • 16.10.2012, 9:28

The member of European Parliament regrets that the sanctions against the Belarusian regime were not extended.

The words of the German MEP are quoted by the radio station Deutsche Welle.

“Only by the means of targeted economic sanctions against particular companies and people backing up the regime the EU can put pressure on autocrat Lukashenka”, - thinks the MEP.

According to the data by Werner Schultz, in the first half of 2012 Minsk’s revenues from the export to the EU accounted for more than 8 billion dollars. “By angry words spoken with the favorable deals at the background it is not possible to make the dictator change his views. They only undermine the trust to the EU’s policies”, - stated the politician.

We would remind that the Council of Ministers of the EU extended the sanctions against Lukashenka and his establishment until 31 October 2013. The respective decision was made on 15 October at the session of the Council in Luxemburg. The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs remains in the list of the people not allowed to the EU.
