Russia uses the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction project to pursue own political aims, Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Energy Romas Švedas thinks.

They are using it for political purposes in order to dominate in the region, The Financial Times quotes his words in an article of March 29 about problems of Lithuania’s energy sector.

Belarus is a big country, let them construct a plant in another place, Švedas says.

According to the paper, the Belarusian NPP will be built close to the Lithuanian border, near Vilnius, which will make Lithuanians anxious about living in the shadow of a plant operating on dubious standards, BelaPAN informs.

At the same time, Lithuania suspects that Russia wants to restrain investment in Visaginas nuclear power plant to keep Lithuania dependent on Russia’s energy, the paper says.
