Poland supports the Belarusian civil society struggling for a chance to live in a normal state.

This statement was made by President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski at a meeting in University of Tartu on March 29.

According to Komorowski, Poland supports the firm course of relations with the Belarusian authorities. “We cannot pretend people are not being beaten there. We cannot pretend we do not see absence of democracy there. We must use univocal criteria to evaluate the authorities’ activity and have courage to help the Belarusians on their way to democracy and freedom,” he said, wp.pl reports.

Poland was the first EU country to impose sanctions on Belarusian officials in response to dispersal of the demonstration on December 19, 2010. Poland also increased financial aid for development of the Belarusian civil society and abolished national visa fees for citizens of Belarus.
