EP draft resolution on Belarus hung up

The European Parliament again didn’t include the draft resolution on Belarus in the agenda of the current session.

The heads of the EP groups dismissed a proposal of the head of the Delegation for Relations with Belarus Jacek Protasiewicz to put a resolution on Belarus on the agenda of the December EP plenary.

“I didn’t expect such a decision, I cannot hide my disappointment,” MEP Jacek Protasiewicz told in an interview to Radio Racyja. He doesn’t exclude that was caused by tricks of Belarusian diplomats.

“These actions may be caused by tricks of the Belarusian diplomacy eagering to split the categorical position of the European Parliament, which says clearly a Belarusian delegation to Euronest should consist of more than five members of the Belarusian “parliament” and at least five representatives of the Belarusian opposition. I note in the daft that if the Belarusian authorities reject this condition, then the delegation must consist of ten representatives of the democratic opposition and NGOs. This item in the draft resolution causes a particular dislike of the Belarusian authorities, who use different means to influence certain political leaders in the EP even blocking a discussion on the draft,” Jacek Protasiewicz stated.

The European People's Party and European conservators and liberals have already expressed their support to the draft. European socialists and the greens are strongly against, Jacek Protasiewicz says. They do not agree with the draft item on participation of the Belarusian delegation in Euronest. The head of the Delegation for Belarus notes he would seek consideration of the draft resolution at the parliamentary session in Strasburg scheduled for December.
