Paval Sevyarynets: at first stop repressions, not sanctions against regime

Co-head of the organising committee on creation Belarusian Christian Democracy party, member of the Belarusian delegation in Brussels Paval Sevyarynets said the EP’s resolution reflected a position of Europe towards the situation in Belarus.

The politician thinks that now everything depends on how effective and insistently the Europeans will demand its fulfilment, Radio Svaboda reports.

“Everything depends on executive bodies, the European Commission, a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday. If Europe demonstrates its strong political will, progress in the relations with Belarus will be achieved,” he said.

Speaking about suspension of visa bans for 6 months for Belarusian officials, Sevyarynets said a concrete decision would be taken by executive institutions, which had imposed the sanctions.

“This is the step that allows the Europeans to conduct negotiations. The main thing now is not to be deceived during these 6 months. In my view, it would be better to wait for some concrete steps of the regime, and then lift any restrictions. Let’s stop repressions at first, and then – you are welcome!” the politician suggests.

“The words we heard more resemble a desire to have for step-to-step talks. At first, stop all repressions, remove repressive articles from the Criminal Code, let “Narodnaya Volya” be spread in Belarus, rehabilitate the people, who are restrained of liberty... And then we will settle concrete issues on concrete people,” Paval Sevyarynets is sure.
